Statement by Minister Chagger on Italian Heritage Month

Statement OTTAWA, June 1, 2020

Today marks the beginning of Italian Heritage Month in Canada, where we honour and celebrate the exceptional contributions of Canadians of Italian origin in shaping our society.

Canada is home to more than 1.5 million Canadians of Italian descent, which makes it one of the largest Italian diasporas in the world. Italian Heritage Month is the perfect time to recognize and showcase the rich culture and heritage of Italian Canadians, as well as their ongoing contributions to building a stronger, vibrant and more inclusive Canada.

I would like to remind everyone of the importance of cherishing our openness and our differences, especially in these uncertain times caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As Minister of Diversity and Inclusion and Youth, and on behalf of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Government of Canada, I invite all Canadians to learn more about the long history and achievements of Italian Canadians. I wish you all a happy Italian Heritage Month.

Déclaration de la ministre Chagger à l’occasion du Mois du patrimoine italien

C’est aujourd’hui que commence le Mois du patrimoine italien au Canada, au cours duquel nous honorons et célébrons l’apport exceptionnel des Canadiens et Canadiennes d’origine italienne au façonnement de notre société.

On retrouve au Canada plus de 1,5 million de Canadiens et Canadiennes d’origine italienne, soit l’une des plus grandes diasporas italiennes au monde. Le Mois du patrimoine italien est le moment tout désigné de reconnaître et de mettre en valeur la richesse de la culture et du patrimoine de la communauté italo-canadienne, ainsi que sa contribution à faire du Canada un pays plus fort, dynamique et inclusif.

Je souhaite rappeler à tous l’importance de chérir notre ouverture d’esprit et nos différences, particulièrement en ces temps d’incertitude attribuables à la pandémie de la #COVID-19.

À titre de ministre de la Diversité et de l’Inclusion et de la Jeunesse, et au nom du premier ministre Justin Trudeau et du gouvernement du Canada, j’invite l’ensemble des Canadiens à en apprendre plus au sujet de la longue histoire et des réalisations de leurs concitoyens d’origine italienne. Je vous souhaite à tous un très joyeux Mois du patrimoine italien.
